NHL Trade Deadline '09: Jokinen to Flames

The NHL Trade Deadline passed without a flurry of blockbuster deals. Given the poor economy, this was not a surprise. This doesn't mean we shouldn't be disappointed in the conservative approach of General Managers.
The biggest winners of the deadline were the Calgary Flames. C Olli Jokinen and D Jordan Leopold have been added to the mix. Calgary with these two guys is a darkhorse in the quest for the Stanley Cup. I consider the Flames big winners today, despite giving up a first and second round pick. The Flames are going for it a! ll and that was clearly stated today.
Another big move was Bill Guerin heading to Pittsburgh from the Islanders. The Penguins need more firepower in some regard, and Guerin can provide that. The Pens have struggled without Marian Hossa this season, and Guerin is a nice addition offensively. The Pens only gave up a conditional draft pick. This move solidifies Pittsburgh as a playoff team.
The Boston Bruins needed a boost after losing 8 of their last 11. Defenseman Steve Montador and F Mark Recchi have been added to the roster for s! ome prospects. The Bruins also brought in a 2nd rounder in 201! 0. Recch i brings experience and leadership for a very young team. Montador is a solid defenseman who can help out offensively as well.
Other moves have Philly dealing Scottie Upshall to Phoenix for Daniel Carcillo. The Rangers picked up D Derek Morris and F Nik Antropov, but gave up Petr Prucha, Nigel Dawes, and others. Columbus who is suddenly a threat out West added F Antoine Vermette. Pascal Leclaire was sent to Ottawa in return. Both these teams should benefit from this deal. Carolina also brought back LW Erik Cole.Overall a conservative approach for GMs, but some key players were moved. Calgary, Pittsburgh, Columbus, and Boston would be my winners.
