Du Rand and Loots shine

The African Swimming Championships took place this past weekend and even though the spotlight was on Tunisia, the South African team performed well.

Olympic swimmer George du Rand got the gold medal in the 100 meter backstroke when he swam the championship best in 55.92 seconds.

Amanda Loots also found herself in the records books when she broke the 200 meter individual medley record. She also bettered her own time which she set in Egypt six years ago.

Meanwhile Du Rand says he was surprised with his result. "I was taking things a bit easy with training after a big year with the Olympics but I am happy to have produced some solid performances".

He and the team will now shift their focus to the World Championships in July next year. The event is held every two years and will take place in Rome, Italy. Qualifying for the competition will start in April and Du Rand says he and the team will be looking to win some medals.
