Review: "Baseball, 365 Days," by Joseph Wallace

I'm a huge photo hound, as I have various types of photography in my house, and as well, thoroughly enjoy taking action sports photos. For a hobby that's so near and dear to me, I've got the book for you.

Obviously, if you're reading this blog, you love baseball and recently I was given a copy of "Baseball, 365 Days" by Joseph Wallace; thus, naturally being a fan of the sport, I have fallen in love very much with it.

However, "Baseball, 365 Days" isn't just about baseball photos -- it's literally and archive of the ga! me from the early 70's to today.

It features everything from colorful fans, to Ozzie Smith in the field, to Nolan Ryan being fierce on the mound and everything in between. Each stunning photograph -- from plays in the field to tender moments, like fans interacting with their favorite player were picked from the archives of Major League Baseball.

The book isn't just litany of pictures placed in a book --- each photograph tells a story, from one of exuberance to pain.

With each photograph, Wallace gives a brief summation and commentary about the picture at hand -- but, keep in mind -- it's the pictures that tell the story, not the words on the page.

"Baseball, 365 Days", may rival "War and Peace" in terms of the number of pages, I assure you it's a much more fun and enjoyable book.

I have the book on my desk, and in the end, I make it point look at it every so often now, not only to become a better photographer and story ! teller -- it's because I love the game of baseball so much.

Folks, Let's Put B-Rob On The All-Star Team...

Yesterday, Major League Baseball announced that Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts is one of five candidates for the final spot on the 2008 American League All-Star team. An all-star last in 2007, he's currently .295 with 7 home runs and 32 RBIs, along with 24 stolen bases.

The winner will be decided through the Monster 2008 All-Star Game Final Vote, to be held exclusively on MLB.com, the official website of Major League Baseball. The Orioles are encouraging fans to vote for Brian from now until balloting closes at 5 p.m. (EDT) on Thursday, July 10.

In ad! dition to voting online, fans can also text the word "Vote" to 36197 to have the All-Star Game Final Vote candidates sent to their mobile device. To vote for Brian, fans should reply "A5." Standard rate messaging fees apply. Please check with carriers for details. In Canada, fans should text the word "Vote" to 88555.

There is no limit to the number of times fans can vote.

Let's send Brian to New York to join George Sherrill in representing the Orioles at the 2008 All-Star Game!

2008 Grades: The Infield, Part One

Since we're well into the off-season now, I'm going to spend the next week or so and go through the roster and assign players grades along with some brief opinion what I think of them.

First Baseman, Kevin Millar

2007 Numbers: .234, 20 HR, 72 RBI, .323 OBP, .394 SLG, 145 games
Grade: D

Kevin Millar has had a fine career, but his career his obviously close to the end of the road as evidenced by the last two months of the season.

He was a decent glove at first base, and provided some pop; otherwise that, he didn't instill a lot of confidence with me at all. Keep in mind, his numbers weren't terrible, but they are not what you expect from a first baseman at all these days and his numbers were down all across the board based on! what he's done career-wise.

Millar is a great clubhouse guy, and a fan favorite; however, he's 37, and I'd like the organization to move on from him along with see what's out on the market.

Hell, I'd rather give Huff first base than him, but I have a sneaking suspicion that he'll find his way back to Baltimore if we can't sign a slugging first baseman.

Second Baseman, Brian Roberts
2007 Numbers: 155 games, .296 AVG, 9 HR, 57 RBI, 40 SB, .378 OBP, .450 SLG, 51 SB's
Grade: A-/B+

Brian is no doubt one of the faces of the organization through his charity work and interaction with the fans, and his 2008 season once again proved why he's one of the best lead-off and second baseman in baseball.

He's a good all around player with speed, some power, hits for average, and was solid from the start of t! he season to the end.

Whether he should be traded i! s anothe r topic, but I think if the Orioles consider his age (almost 31) to be an issue and do a full rebuilding program, he might be a name (to the sadness of some fans) that could, and probably should be moved if he and the team cannot come to terms on an extension.

Aubrey Huff, First/Third Base/DH
2007 Numbers: .304 AVG, 32 HR, 108 RBI, .360 OBP, .552 SLG, 48 2B
Grade: A

I didn't know what to expect about of Huff this season, but I was pleasantly surprised and elated at what he did at plate.

Considering the way he started things off with fans before the season with his appearance on the "Bubba The Love Sponge Show", the boos he encountered early turned to cheers because his bat did the talking for him.

He finally broke through in 2008 and showed why the Orioles bestowed such a contract on him in the first pla! ce. His numbers steadily improved throughout the season, and he kept the offense rolling, especially in the summer months.

I don't know if his season was an aberration, or a sign that he's back as a force at the plate, but the Orioles should be looking for a lot from him in 2009.

The Tragedy of Miguel Tejada

This week has not been a good one for hard-core fans of the game, and perhaps one of the sadder stories of the steroid era came to a conclusion yesterday.

Miguel Tejada this week was charged with lying to Congressional investigators about the use of performance-enhancing drugs in baseball. He pleaded guilty yesterday to the charges, and his punishment! -- if any -- should be coming shortly. However, the saddest part of yesterday was seeing Tejada in Houston yesterday evening during a press conference after appearing in Washington.

He was signed to a handsome contract to be part of the rebuilding process in Baltimore as a free agent from Oakland -- where he was considered one of the better shortstops in the game at the time -- and vault the team into contention.

Nationals Gets the Best of the O's; Quick Hits...

The Orioles lost 3-1 to the Nationals yesterday in Fort Lauderdale; however, Koji Uehara looked good -- real good. The Japanense hurler, coming back from a strained hamstring, did give up a run, but struck out seven out of the eleven hitters he faced. His counterpart on the mound for Washington, young Sharion Martis pitched six shutout innings and only gave up three hits, while fanning four.

Alfredo Simon -- a candidate for the rotation -- got plenty of work in as he pitched four innings, and gave up two runs; however, he struck out one. His ERA is a paltry 0.90.

Baltimore's only run came off a Chris Gomez sacrifice fly in the 7th inning.

O's Lose on the Left Coast to Angels, 5-2: Trembley's Decision on Bergesen in Red Sox Loss...

After their brutal extra-inning loss to the Red Sox on Wednesday, the Orioles flew out to the left coast to face another tough customer -- the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The Baltimore offense sputtered, and the pitching staff was victimized by Bobby Abreu -- who had two home runs and 4 RBI's -- along with a huge fifth inning, and they lost to Los Angeles, 5-2.

The Angels' John Lackey (3-3) went eight innings for the victory, and Brian Fuentes got his 23rd save.

Jeremy Guthrie (6-8) took the loss on Thursday as he lasted seven innings and gave up five runs. He gave up a solo home run to Bobby Abreu in the fourth inning, but the Angels got to him in t! he fifth inning as he allowed Macier Izturis to reach base on a triple, then walked Mike Napoli, thereafter, Chone Figgins plated Izturis and Los Angeles took the lead, 2-1. Moments later, Abreu stepped up to the plate and took Guthrie deep again to give the Angels a 5-2 lead.

Guthrie was not terrible in his outing, but it took a few bad pitches and a big inning to put the nail in the coffin for Baltimore. However, his offense didn't help him much out at all as they only mustered five hits, and the big three in the lineup -- Brian Roberts, Adam Jones & Nick Markakis -- went for 0-for-12.

Playoff Reflections; A-Rod, C.C., Cliff Lee, & a Tale of a Few Former Orioles

I've been away for a few days on travel, but right now the 2009 playoffs have been extremely compelling for the most part, with every game coming down to crucial-at-bats, timely hitting, and of course pitching and more pitching.

It's amazing to see how far, far different playoff baseball especially with the elite teams than it is (no offense) watching the Baltimore Orioles day in and day out. I've got in my mind now that we're going to see a Yankees-Phillies World Series, which would kind of be nice for me that I might have the chance to catch in game in person. I think the New York Yankess take it all simply because Alex Rodriguez is finally coming together at the most critical time, and besides -- perhaps -- Albert Pujols, he is the BEST all-around player in the last generation.

I know some Yankee fans over the years have flamed, tarred and cussed at Rodriguez for his failings in the playoffs; however, he's looking to be the man now.

The Yankees may! have a store-bought team, but their guys produce ans execute. I don't know if I'd give Joe Girardi credit for helping the Yankees, but I think their core -- Jeter, Rivera, Pettitte, Rodriguez, and Posada -- know what to do to win. Also, it looks like Cano returned in 2009, and the reserves they've plugged in have delivered. The whole team is clicking the playoffs, and their bullpen is much, much better than expected -- in fact, they look better now than they did in the regular season.

I do think the big X-factor for the Yankees was the acquisition of C.C. Sabathia. I really thought he should have never left the National League, and was going to struggle again in the American Lrague at times. For most part, he's been very good in the American League and while his numbers are nowhere near as dominating as he was with the Brewers last season, he's showing in these playoffs why he's getting paid the big bucks.

Devils (47-24-4) at Rangers (39-28-9); Avery vs 'Fatso'

Game is on Versus @ 7pm ET

Forget about the Sean Avery/Martin Brodeur sideshow (or main event, depending how you look at it), the Rangers are desperate for two points and want to stop this losing streak before it gets out of control. A win tonight at MSG against t! heir rivals in New Jersey is certainly the most important thing about tonight's game. Sure the Sean Avery /Martin Brodeur (and David Clarkson) feud may be fun to watch, but forget about entertainment for one night - as long as the Rangers beat the Devils this can be the biggest snoozefest of the season for all I care.

Michal Rozsival won't be in the lineup tonight, but will likely be back on the blueline when the Rangers next play on Thursday against the Hurricanes. [Link]

The Rangers will not make Sean Avery available to the media until after tonight's game. Similarly, Brodeur has remainned silent about Avery. [Link]

Brendan Shanahan returns to MSG for the first time since leaving the Rangers last season. I expect Shanny! to get a standing ovation tonight (or at least a welcoming re! ception) as it was the Rangers organization that turned its back on him, after he proclaimed that he only wanted to be a Blueshirt. [Link]

Blair Betts has been nominated as the Rangers nominee for the Bill Masterson Trophy. [Link]

Puck Daddy (keep in mind he's a NJD fan) takes a good look at the Avery/Brodeur sideshow, the game itself and a little information about the new Sean Avery movie, titled 'Puckface'. [Link]

Rangerland.net has some good videos to remind you exactly why there is so much bad blood between Brodeur & Avery.

While, NJ.com thinks that Avery & the Rangers might be exactly what the slumping Devils need to get back on track. [Link]

Capitals Steroid Scandal?

There was an article posted this morning on a Tampa Bay website, reporting that a steroid dealer in Florida had been busted and claimed that he was dealing steroids to members of the Washington Capitals and other professional athletes. As of now it is unconfirmed, likely just a desperate attempt by the suspect to obtain a plea bargain with prosecutors. The dealer along with his wife were caught in possession of $200k worth of anabolic steroids, so they are definitely looking at some serious time in jail if con! victed.

The Capitals Insider is now reporting on the story and is probably the best source for any updates on the matter throughout the day. I would expect a statement by the Washington Capitals about this sometime today (basically a boilerplate PR move to say they will investigate the claims but that they are not true.")

If it is true, who do you think are the most likely users? Donald Brashear? Chris Clark (has been doing a lot of rehab for injuries the past few seasons)?

My guess...Alexander Semin - remember that fight with Marc Staal from earlier this season? The one where Semin started playing the drums on Staal's back once they were on the ice. There is now an explanation for that - roid rage ;)

In my opinion, this is just a desperate attempt by the dealer to get a plea bargain and he's willing to say or do what! ever is possible to have something working in his favor.
!
Up date (from Kukla's Korner):

NHL STATEMENT
"The Washington Capitals have no knowledge of any aspect of this allegation. Capitals players were subjected to no-notice testing three times in each of the past two seasons pursuant to the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and there was no indication of any improper conduct or wrongdoing.

"Even though there are no specifics provided in the story and we have no reason, at this point, to believe the allegations are true, the National Hockey League takes all matters of this nature very seriously and will conduct a prompt investigation."

-- Bill Daly, NHL deputy commissioner

CAPITALS STATEMENT
"We have no reason to believe there is any merit to this story, but the National Hockey League and the Washington Capitals take all su! ch allegations seriously. Capitals players have fully participated in the NHL's random drug testing program, and at no point has a Capitals player tested positive. In addition our players have been tested at international events, such as World Championships and Olympics. We welcome and will fully cooperate with the NHL's investigation."

Another Zherdev Interview Surfaces

Last week an interview with Nikolai Zherdev by a Russian newspaper was translated by Beyond the Blueshirts and we had it posted here on PuckCentral.

Once again we have another interview that has been translated by Beyond the Blueshirts from a recent interview that Zherdev did with Sports day by day (all in Russian).

The more that Zherdev talks the clearer it is that he already has made up his mind that he has no intention of playing in New York next season. At this point, I! don't want Zherdev and his 'just a job' mentality back as a Ranger.

- Nikolai, do you suppose that it's a plot of Rangers coach John Tortorella to tell the team's management that he doesn't see you in his game plan?

- Anything's possible. There's no point in blaming a person without evidence. It could be that the coach has nothing to do with it at all. Why even start guessing? Though the previous coach of the team, Tom Renney, trusted me more than Tortorella. But John didn't tell me that I didn't suit him.

- Now, at the threshold of the [arbitration] hearing, is your mind uneasy?

- Not especially. My agent Alexander Tyzhnykh and I are sure we're right. I believe that I deserve more [than the $3.25m qualifying offer]. Look at my statistics for the past season. I don't think that I'll be left without a team. My agent has assured me that several NHL clubs are waiting for the the situa! tion with the arbitration case to be settled and will show sub! stantial interest in me.

- Is it true that there's a possibility of your returning to Russia?

- It's impossible to rule anything out. The KHL is a strong league, in which it's not at all disgraceful to play. There is interest in me on the part of Russian teams. After July 31st, I'll weigh everything and make the best decision for myself. But, to be honest, as an ambitious player, I would still like to stay in the NHL.

- And what kind of contract will suit you? Would you agree on five million a year?

- First of all, I would like to sign a long-term agreement with the club, for 3-4 years. To have some semblance of stability. As for the number — the bigger the number on the contract, the better.

- Where have you spent the first half of the summer?

- In the Crimea. At my parents house in the small town of Chernomorsk. It's nice here — the sea, the air. At the same time I've been keeping ! in shape.

- The World Championship was mixed for you. After the second shift of your first game you broke a finger on your hand. In your heart, did you not regret that you arrived in Switzerland?

- Of course, that incident didn't make [the experience] more positive. But as you know even with the injury I was on the ice, giving everything I had in each game. I did all I could for the team. And I became a world champion. So what regrets could we speak about?

- In New York, you rent a spacious apartment in the heart of the city in Manhattan. How much is the rent for your place?

- It's no secret that real estate is very expensive there. I paid $10,000 a month. But it was well worth it. After all, they don't call New York the center of the world for nothing. Here it's possible get a good rest.

- Have personal fans of you appeared in New York?

- I was a little amused by a poster wh! ich I saw at one of the Rangers home games. It was held by a ! girl and on it was written "Niki, I want to marry you." But don't think that I only had personal fans, but [also] fans who often approached me and said that they liked my style of play. The majority of Rangers fans call me "Z" or "Niki".

- Since you're already familiar with life there, have you thought about remaining overseas after your career ends?

- No, life in America doesn't suit me. The difference in mentality is too great between us. I dreamed of getting to the NHL for many years. My dream came true. But now, as soon as the season finishes, I'm immediately drawn to Kiev. All my family is there. The NHL is just a job.

- I recall an incident last season when you came to blows on the ice with Steven Stamkos of Tampa. Why were you so upset with the first pick in the 2008 draft?

- He hit me from behind. How else would a normal person react? I could have suffered a concussion. Or become disabled. Adding to my! annoyance was that the referee, most likely, slept through the incident. He decided, at least, that Stamkos hit me without breaking the rules. So I fought for the first time in the NHL. I vaguely remember that I fought with him for a few seconds, but then both of us fell down.

- What do NHL players not like to talk about amongst themselves?

- About hockey, probably. Because there are plenty of topics for discussion.

- Coming to Kiev every summer, do you follow news about Ukrainian hockey? Have you heard, that a candidate for the post of coach of the Ukranian national team is Michael Krushelnyski, a Canadian with Ukranian roots who is currently under contract with Chekhov Vityaz?

- Frankly speaking, I don't always manage to follow it. Kiev is dear to me, but don't forget that I was still a teenager, 13 years old, when I left for Electrostal. I'd play for the Ukrainian national team with pleasure — if the l! evel of development of hockey here was comparable with Russia.! In the meantime it's not even worth talking about, unfortunately.

Semenov Signs In KHL

I'm sure you are all aware of the story surrounding Alexei Semenov who was reported to have signed a one-year, $600K contract with the Rangers. It was reported prior to their first game in Pittsburgh that Semenov had signed but and then later backed out of the deal. Supposedly he backed out of the deal because his wife wasn't happy.

Well, it looks like his wife was right. According to the Edmonton Journal:
[Semenov] is returning to Russia: he's just signed a one-year contract with Dynamo Moscow of the KHL for $1.6 million (all terms US), much to the delight of his wife.
You can say what you like but it clearly was the better situation for Semenov. In New York he was going to be a 7th defenseman making $600k, while in the KHL he will make $1.6M and it's tax-free money. Tha! t's a significant pay difference and he'll be a lot closer to his family.

Liga Italia 2009/2010 | Juventus Masih Yakin Ferarra0

ferrara

Robbo: We Need Quality Players

By Jaymes Payten-Marsh
For THBN

The England and Tottenham goalkeeper will sign a seven year contract this week, reportedly worth around £32,000 per week.

Paul Robinson said: "All being well, it is just a case of dotting the I's and crossing the T's in the next few days. I go home on Thursday and within two or three days of me being at home, we should be able to announce that I have signed it."

Robbo has called upon Spurs chairman, Levy, to fund the transfers of at least three top players if the team are to aim for a higher spot in the Premiership and even a place in the UEFA Champions League.

Robinson said: "We have got a lot of potential. We need three or fou! r quality players now.

"We have bought a lot of young English players who have a lot of potential and in a few years we will have a top team, but if we are going to be a top team now, we need to make the step up and you do that by bringing in three or four quality players.

"If we get a bit of experience and quality, we will be there or thereabouts," added the former Leeds man.

Paul Robinson has become a cult figure down at White Hart Lane, and so these few words of encouragement to his chairman will also go a long way in the minds of the Spurs faithful.

talkSPORT announce Spurs are close to Crouch & Bentley signings

talkSPORT radio have announced that Tottenham Hotspur are very close to signing Peter Crouch from Liverpool, and David Bentley from Blackburn.

The UK national sports station has stated that sources close to them have said that Spurs are "extremely close to signing Peter Crouch as part of the transfer that will take Robbie Keane the other way".

They also stated that "Tottenham Hotspur are about to announce the signing of David Bentley from Blackburn".
After all the rubbish that's been circulating recently, I'll believe it when I see it.
If anyone has any other info on the talkSPORT exclusive, please let us know.

Harry's spot on

Harry Redknapp's comment relating to clubs holding off selling their players in order to see if Manchester City's fat cat owners will stump up more cash, is spot on.

Since when does Jermain Defoe cost £20 million? West Ham are also holding out for at least £15 million for Bellamy. Harry expressed the fact that we had a bid turned down last week, which the media believe to be in the region of £6 million.

Has the transfer system gone mad?! We are supposed to be heading into a recession, yet Premier League club's that are sprinting towards financial trouble, namely Portsmouth and West Ham, want to gamble with fate.

Jermain Defoe would be welcomed back to White Hart Lane with open arms, but at a respectable price. Harry's not stupid; he won't be paying over the odds for players. His wise persistence in not spending over and above what a player is worth could spell the end of our pursuit of any Portsmouth and West Ham p! layers.

Milan Sulit Penuhi Gaji Eto'o

United & Milan Bersaing Dapatkan Luis Fabiano

MILAN - Segera setelah menjadi topskor Piala Konfederasi 2009, Luis Fabiano menjadi incaran utama klub-klub top Eropa.

Galliani: Chelsea Tawar Pirlo, tapi...

Salah satunya yakni LA Galaxy David Beckham.
Sementara, Bale kabarnya bakal diplot menggantikan posisi Marek Jankulovski.

Donati Belajar Banyak Dari AC Milan

Gerrard rallies Reds

Liverpool were soundly beaten 2-0 in Florence with Liverpool failing to get into their stride.

Reds chief Rafa Benitez blasted his side's mentality in the below-par performance and Gerrard is keen to erase the defeat with a positive result at Chelsea.

"It was a really disappointing night," Gerrard told the Liverpool Echo.

"We are disappointed with our first-half performance. We just didn't turn up and were second best all over the pitch. We deserved to go in behind.

"There was a reaction in the second half - without creating many clear-cut chances - but we lost the game in the first half.

"We didn't do what we usually do in Europe. We usually play with a high tempo, pass the ball well and play really well on the counter-attack. Those things weren't there and it was all over the pitch - from front to back.

Massive game
"Now we've got a massive game at Chelsea on Sunday. We have to get this result out of ou! r system quickly and show a reaction at Stamford Bridge."

Liverpool dropped to third in Group E as a result of the defeat to Fiorentina and Lyon's win over Debrecen, and Gerrard knows it is important the Reds get back to winning ways in the next European outing against Lyon next month.

"It's wide open in this group and there is a lot of football still to be played," added Gerrard.

"It's important now that we win our next home game against Lyon. If we win all our home games and try to pick up a couple of points in the last two away games then we will be fine."

Rossoneri Kurang Pede

Milan,-

Hasil jeblok AC Milan di Seri A ternyata berlanjut ke Liga Champions. Masalah kepercayaan diri pun disebut-sebut menjadi penyebab menukiknya penampilan Rossoneri.

"Saya pikir jika melihat penampilan semalam, minimal kami seri.

SAMP SALUTA IL MARASSI:3-3 CON LA JUVE

I GOL DELLA GARA (Del Piero 2,Trezeguet,Cassano,Maggio,Montella).

A San Siro abbiamo giocato meglio noi.

Dalle prime bizze in Under 21 all'Europeo 2004. Lippi cosa aspetti?

Torres has threatened defenders

Curtis Davies admits Aston Villa will have to be at their defensive best if they are to cope with the threat of an in-form Fernando Torres.

El Nino got off the mark for the season with a goal in the Reds' 4-0 demolition of Stoke City on Wednesday and Davies reckons it will be almost impossible to the thwart the Spaniard if he's in the mood when the Villans visit Anfield on Monday night.

"You can't have special plans for a player like Torres because he's on! e of the best strikers in the world," said Davies.

"If you make a plan for him he'll do something different. He's that good a player. Last year we didn't do well against Liverpool - but at least he was quiet - and the year before we did well when we drew 2-2.

"We play against top players every week but they don't get any bigger than Torres.

"We'll have to be on our game and hopefully it'll be more like the scoreline of two years ago than of last season."

Carlo wants positive appeal

The Blues have been banned from buying new players for 18 months after being found guilty of inducing Gael Kakuta to break a contract with Lens in order to move to Stamford Bridge in 2007.

With an ageing squad, and taking into account the possibility of players sustaining serious injuries, Chelsea are expected to struggle in the long term following the suspension.

Ancelotti, who only took over this summer, acknowledges the punishment is far from ideal, however, the Italian is confident the Premier League club will achieve a positive result from an ongoing appeal.

"The decision was a surprise for me. But now the club are appealing, and we have to wait for a good result for us," he said.

Long-term deals
"We hope that they overturn the decision. Now, the transfer embargo is not a problem because we have a very good team and very good players - but in the future, we'll have to wait and see.

"Now I have to think about m! y job and about my players. I haven't spoken to owner Roman Abramovich about it, but it's not necessary for me to do that. I don't have to speak to Roman about this situation."

Chelsea did not spend heavily on new signings this summer, deciding instead to secure current players, such as John Terry, Didier Drogba and Ashley Cole, to new-and-improved contracts.

Ancelotti insists this is not because the Stamford Bridge hierarchy feared punishment from Fifa was imminent.

"Getting players on long-term deals - given this decision - is very important. But that's not about this decision," he said.

"It's more about the future of this club - to have John Terry, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba and Ashley Cole in this team and at this club for years to come."

Turnberry turnout rewarded

Tom Watson
Tom Watson drew a big following during Saturday's play at Turnberry

They will not admit it, but the R & A must be slightly disappointed with the attendance figures at Turnberry.

This is among the biggest sporting events in the world, yet the crowds on Thursday and Friday were well short of the 30,000 mark.

In each stand on each tee or green, there are empty seats - lots of them.

The feud involving Colin Montgomerie and Sandy Lyle ended with a whimper as ! next year's Ryder Cup captain bogeyed the 18th on Friday - missing the cut - to polite applause from a smattering of hardy souls in rain jackets.

Is this due to a lack of excitement, the recession, the weather, or the lack of a half-decent route down the Ayrshire coast?

It surely cannot be the excitement factor given the thrills Tom Watson, Mark Calcavecchia, Steve Marino and Miguel Angel Jiminez have treated us to.

And those that have turned up for the weekend have created a good atmosphere despite the field being shorn of Scots and world number one Tiger Woods.

At £55, a day ticket may be a bit on the pricey side in the current climate.

The attendance of 23,500 for the first round compares badly to the opener at Royal Birkdale 12 months ago, where more than 36,000 watched golden oldie Greg Norman burn up the course.

!
Next year at St Andrews, which is the 150th anniversary, we'll have 200,000 people
David Hill
R&A director of championships

But there is an insistence that attendance comparisons be drawn with the last time the tournament was held here rather than at more accessible venues.

The director of championships with the R & A, David Hill, had predicted crowds would top 120,000 over the week and that, if they did, it would be a success! .

So far, so good on that score. But the total will be well below that of other Open venues.

And will that affect Turnberry's hopes of holding the jewel in golf's crown in the future?

"It's fantastic to be here at Turnberry," Hill told BBC Scotland on Saturday. "It's just such a wonderful, iconic venue.

"It's not the easiest place to get to and it's hard for fans when the really heavy storms come if you haven't got the wet weather gear.

"But we've got queues for the pay gates that are 100m long today and there are a lot of senior citizens coming along.

"Maybe they are reliving their youth and cheering on Tom Watson.

"We'll have our lowest attendance of any Open venue and that simply reflects the location, lack of accommodation in the area and, to some extent, the road system.

Lee Westwood in the rough at Turnberry
England's Lee Westwood is a big fan of the Ailsa Course

"But next year at St Andrews, which is the 150th anniversary, we'll have 200,000 people and there will be a huge number of visitors from overseas."

Lee Westwood blamed the recession for the turnout.

"I think the current economic climate does Turnberry no favours to be honest," said the Englishman, who is placed nicely on the leaderboard.

"I think it's a fantastic links golf course and it would be a shame if it wasn't on the Open rota. It's great to have it back here."

Turnberry is in a beautiful part of the world, but it is remote and not the most accessible of places, despite being located on the main Glasgow to Stranraer road.

Furthermore, on Friday afternoon, the conditions turned! extremely nasty, leading to many heading for the exits despite there being six hours of play left.

Given the ticket price, it would normally take more than bad weather to force people home.

A man who had a positive second round - which was incidentally played out in front of 28,000 people - had a positive spin to the crowd debate.

American Steve Marino - co-leader after two rounds - reckons nobody would bother coming out to watch in his homeland if the weather turned the way it did here.

"There's actually more people here than back home I think," he said.

"I know it's the Open, but I don't think you'd see this many people out here if the weather was like this in America, that's for sure."

Saturday has seen an improvement in the weather and the crowds and the swashbuckling Watson's performance has finally started queues forming behind the stands.

Those who have braved the elements - and the A77 - have been thoroughly entertai! ned.

Liverpool agree fee for Kyrgiakos

Sotirios Kyrgiakos
Kyrgiakos played one season at Rangers in 2005/2006

Liverpool have agreed a deal with AEK Athens to sign Greek international Sotirios Kyrgiakos for a reported £2m.

The 30-year-old former Rangers defender will undergo a medical on Merseyside this week with a view to si! gning before Monday's home game with Aston Villa.

"He is a player with experience who can hopefully help us in defence," Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez told his club website.

"He has experience in British football with Rangers."

Benitez, whose side beat Stoke 4-0 on Wednesday night, added: "He's a good player in the air, strong and aggressive. We were looking for a player with experience.

"He will have the medical this week, it has to be before the weekend."

The Greek player's arrival would be a timely one because Reds defenders Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel are currently out injured. Agger has a back problem and Skrtel is sidelined because of a jaw injury.

Liverpool complete Keane transfer

Liverpool have completed the signing of striker Robbie Keane from Tottenham for a fee that could rise to £20.3m.

Keane, 28, underwent a medical on Monday after agreeing personal terms on a four-year contract worth around £80,000 a week over the weekend.

Keane has has a passion for Liverpool as a boy and had wanted to play at Anfield.

They will be mixed feeling's from the Spurs fans for the Irish man after 6 years at white Hart lane but mainly most fans are just sorry to see him go.

Late goals from substitute Juliano Belletti and Frank Lampard spared Chelsea's blushes as they came from behind to beat a belligerent Stoke.

Rory Delap had earlier gi! ven City the lead, latching on to a James Beattie pass and chipping over Petr Cech.

But with three minutes to go Belletti popped up at the far post to head home a Franco Di Santo cross.

And deep into injury time Lampard lashed in a fierce drive from the edge of the area to earn Chelsea the win.

The ecstasy that greeted Lampard's winner, particularly the mobbing of manager Luis Felipe Scolari, was a clear expression of the spirit and unity that the Chelsea boss had called for from his players.
